Pilates for functional fitness and the fun stuff!

Pilates isn't just about turning up and enjoying a fantastic class, feeling great and a bit of "you" time. The benefits go way beyond the session and even beyond improved day to day activities.

Pilates offers so many benefits, which translate directly to improved performance and enjoyment of all the fun things you want to do and keep doing. Be it sports for fun or at competitve level, walking, gardening, fun with the kids, regular Pilates practice will support the things you're asking of your body.

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that strengthens the body through controlled, purposeful movement. It offers a full-body workout, improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. What is great is that it supports both everyday activities and athletic performance… that doesn’t mean you have to be an athlete to benefit!

The first thing you might hear about Pilates is improved core strength. “The core” includes the abdominal muscles, lower back and pelvic floor. Having a stronger core provides greater stability, enhances movement efficiency and helps protect the spine during daily activities.

Pilates is highly effective for improving posture. There is a lot of focus on spinal alignment and shoulder and pelvic stability, helping to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and poor posture. Better posture can reduce strain on the neck, shoulders and lower back. This results in greater comfort throughout the day.

Another key benefit is increased flexibility and mobility. Pilates encourages muscles to lengthen while strengthening them, allowing joints to move more freely through their natural range of motion. Improved flexibility can reduce stiffness and make everyday movements feel easier and more fluid .. oh, and improve that “athletic performance”.

Balance and coordination are also enhanced through regular Pilates practice. Each session should include exercises to challenge stability and body control, working all those deep stabilising muscles. This helps to improve proprioception i.e. awareness of the body’s position in space. This can reduce the risk of falls and improve confidence in movement, particularly as we age and yes, another win for the “athletic performance”!

Pilates develops muscular endurance by training muscles to work efficiently over extended periods without excessive fatigue. Instead of focusing on heavy weights, Pilates emphasises precise, controlled movements to build lean, functional strength throughout the body.

Joint health also benefits from Pilates. The low-impact approach places minimal stress on the joints while promoting strength in the muscles that support them. This makes Pilates an excellent choice for individuals recovering from injury, managing certain chronic conditions, or seeking a gentler form of exercise.

Then there's improved breathing efficiency. Coordinated breathing techniques encourage better lung expansion, support movement quality, and help activate the deep core muscles. Improved breathing contributes to better exercise performance (athletic performance!) and overall physical function.

To sum up, Pilates provides an all round approach to physical fitness. By strengthening the body from the inside out, improving posture and flexibility, enhancing balance and coordination and supporting joint health, Pilates helps people move with greater strength, control and confidence.

.. and if you do happen to be an athlete, Pilates complements sport-specific training by improving stability, mobility, flexibility and movement mechanics. These improvements can enhance performance while reducing the likelihood of overuse injuries caused by muscular imbalances.

In short … give it a go and keep enjoying the fun stuff!
